Promoting environmental sustainability through research and scientific dissemination

Laboratório da Paisagem is an entity that promotes the sustainable development of the territory, focused on innovation, research and scientific dissemination, raising awareness of the population, and providing environmental services and consultancy. It was founded in 2014 by Guimarães’ City Council and two of the main universities of the northern region, the University of Minho and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.

Research and Education

Laboratório da Paisagem is an Environmental Research and Education centre that acts in the territory, covering areas of intervention as diverse as climate, biodiversity, green areas and land use, water resources, circular economy, health and quality of life, and environmental education.

Project Management and Applications

We are active agents in the management of projects that contribute to improve the environmental quality and the landscape of the territory, in which we partner with higher education institutions, non-governmental organisations and other entities. In parallel, we provide support and consultancy on projects, having several successful applications to national and European funds in our portfolio.

Environmental Communication and Training

We are also a laboratory of ideas. We create communication campaigns to educate, raise awareness and inform the population about sustainable development and its positive impacts. The training activities organised by Laboratório da Paisagem provide citizens and technicians with greater environmental scientific knowledge so that they too can become agents of change.

Promoting an efficient use of natural resources

Identifying the main parameters associated to environmental quality and applying mechanisms for their prevention, monitoring and interpretation.

Preservation of biodiversity and the sustainability of ecosystems

Reinforcing the concept of green structure for cities and their surroundings, and providing input for land management and planning processes.

Developing awareness and education campaigns

Encouraging a more active role for citizens in defending the quality of the natural and built environment in which they live.

Analysis of the Landscape Dynamics

Promoting the understanding of the landscape transformation processes, and the design of creative transdisciplinary visions in the use of spaces and places.

Encouraging the development of innovative projects

Creating a favourable environment for research and innovation in scientific projects that contribute to more inclusive and greener societies.

Stimulating the economic fabric in the environmental area

Boosting sustainability and economic growth through the creation and incubation of innovative business solutions in the agricultural, forestry, food, energy, and environmental areas.
