Guardizela Cork Oak is the Tree of the Year in Guimarães

The people of Guimarães chose a cork oak (Quercus suber), located in Guardizela as Guimarães’ Tree of the Year 2023. Promoted by Laboratório da Paisagem, the vote over the last week left no room for doubt, with that autochthonous specimen collecting 616 votes (47%).

This year, with the contribution of the parishes, which selected the trees in the competition, as a way of involving the whole community, the podium is completed with the stone pine (Pinus pinea) from the Briteiros São Salvador and Briteiros Santa Leocádia UF, with 257 votes (19.6%) and the olive tree (Olea europaea) from Infantas, with 253 votes (19.3%). Note that there were 18 trees in the voting, namely eight stone pines, five oaks, two cork oaks, one white willow, one olive tree and one eucalyptus.

As in previous years, the unveiling of the Guimarães Tree of the Year 2023 takes place on World Tree Day, which is celebrated this Tuesday, 21 March, and aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the municipality’s tree heritage. Remember that in 2022 the winner was the camellia from Casa de Margaride and the previous year the stone pine, from Silvares, was the most voted.
