Guimarães at the 1st conference of the Circular Cities Regions Initiative

During the event, which took place in Brussels between November 8th and 9th, the Municipality of Guimarães presented its plan for the bioeconomy, with the support of the Landscape Laboratory.

The general and innovation coordinator of Laboratório da Paisagem, Francisco Carvalho, represented Guimarães at the first general conference of the Circular Cities Regions Initiative (CCRI), a European climate action program, which took place in Brussels on November 8 and 9. During the event, organized by the European Commission, Guimarães presented its developing plan for the bioeconomy, with the support of the Landscape Laboratory. Under the motto “From vision to reality: Cities & regions drive forward Europe’s circular transition”, the initiative allowed the sharing of ideas and good practices, as well as the monitoring of the roadmap for the circular economy and social innovation that the members of this consortium are developing and promoting at local and regional level.

The event was thus a unique opportunity to delve into concrete examples of political decisions and strategies that lead to the implementation of systemic solutions, namely linking circularity to climate and environmental challenges, financing the circular economy and involving stakeholders, as well as how CCRI can support the circular economy in collaboration with the initiative’s projects and associated partners.

Over the two days, the conference was attended by more than 190 people, in addition to the 370 who took part online, including policymakers, business leaders and circular economy experts from all over Europe.

Guimarães is “pilot city” in European climate action program

Guimarães joined the Circular Cities Regions Initiative (CCRI) in 2021 as one of the 12 European cities selected to take on the role of “pilot city” under the initiative, and is still the only Portuguese city with this status. The program also has 25 “partner cities”, a total of 37 cities from 18 countries.
