The Landscape Lab celebrates its 9th anniversary this Saturday, 24 June. Opened in 2014, the institution is focused on promoting the sustainable development of the territory, innovation, research and scientific dissemination, raising awareness among the population, and providing environmental services and consultancy.
Created by Guimarães City Hall and two of the main universities of the northern region, the University of Minho and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, the Landscape Lab is today a local, national and international reference in the implementation of environmental and sustainable development policies, which aim to raise environmental awareness, the efficient metabolism of cities, the well-being and quality of life of citizens and the protection of natural resources.
The growth of the institution is supported by the numbers, but also by the various distinctions it has earned. Currently, the Landscape Lab has about two dozen researchers and environmental education technicians in the most diverse areas, recognising the importance of multidisciplinary work. The Landscape Lab is today responsible and partner of several projects, and networks, national and European, assuming a prominent position in networks such as EuroCities. In the last year, the Lab of Landscape was involved in national and international applications with a funded amount of more than 2 million euros.
Adelina Pinto, president of the Lab of Landscape, says that “the Lab of Landscape has demonstrated the reason for the decision of the Municipality of Guimarães and the Universities in its creation. With a dedicated and talented team it has been able to lead by example, assuming the importance of research, innovation and environmental education, in the transformation of territories and building more resilient cities.” “The growth has been remarkable, and it only increases our responsibility, but also our ambition to continue to grow the institution,” he says.
While celebrating nine years of activity, the Landscape Lab also begins the celebration of its 10th anniversary, in a programme that will extend until 24 June 2024. The first of 10 moments is the launch of its renewed website. International conferences, exhibitions, installations, the launch of new publications, will also be part of the anniversary calendar, which will be released, soon.
Laboratório da Paisagem is based in the parish of Creixomil, Guimarães, in an old factory reconverted into a centre for Environmental Research and Education that acts in areas as diverse as climate, soil, biodiversity, green areas, water resources, circular economy, health and well-being, and environmental education. In recent years, the Landscape Lab has also strengthened its collaboration with other municipalities and institutions.
