The Landscape Laboratory promoted another initiative in favour of biodiversity, involving the community of Guimarães. The challenge launched last month counted with the enthusiastic participation of 230 people, who dedicated themselves to observe and identify the several species of fauna and flora that inhabit the region.
Over the period of participation, more than 100 surprising observations were registered, covering a total of 86 different species. This result demonstrates not only the population’s interest in knowing and preserving local biodiversity, but also the richness and diversity of the ecosystems present in Guimarães.
Arthropods, plants and birds were once again the groups most highlighted in the observations made by the participants. From small insects and colourful flowers to majestic amphibians, each observation contributed to increase knowledge and the Guimarães Biodiversity Database.
Among the discoveries, a vulnerable species stands out, the Lusitanian salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica), whose record is found in very few places in the municipality of Guimarães. Its presence reveals the importance of preserving natural habitats for the survival of unique and endemic species.
Another remarkable observation was the identification of a small moth, the Colibri sphinx moth (Macroglossum stellatarum), one of the most interesting butterflies of the Portuguese fauna, although common in the country. Its presence in the region emphasises the relevance of urban green spaces as ecological corridors for local fauna. It is capable of feeding in mid-flight, remaining almost motionless while beating its wings at an astonishing speed.
The Landscape Lab, responsible for coordinating the challenge, expressed great satisfaction with the participation and enthusiasm shown by the community. Ana Pinheira, researcher from the institution, highlighted that “through this initiative, we managed to strengthen the bond between people and the nature that surrounds us. It is gratifying to see the population involved in the conservation of biodiversity and to discover the importance of our local ecosystems and ways to protect species”.
Although this year’s challenge has ended, the Guimarães Biodiversity Database remains open to the continued participation of all interested parties. The free mobile application Biodiversity GO! is available for Android and IOS, allowing each individual to contribute to the expansion of knowledge about the region’s fauna and flora.
The success of this initiative demonstrates the potential of the Guimarães community to get involved and contribute to the preservation and enhancement of local biodiversity. With the continuity of these actions, we will be closer to promoting awareness and conservation of ecosystems, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
