Guimarães continues to strengthen its commitment to the preservation of local biodiversity and has just seen another initiative approved. The Asa.Delta project, led by the Landscape Laboratory, has a special focus on birds and butterflies, due to their crucial role as bioindicators of habitat quality, making it possible to assess the state of conservation and health of ecosystems.
The Asa.Delta project, financed to the tune of 48,000 euros by the Environmental Fund, is in line with national and European conservation strategies and stands out for its active involvement of the community, including schools, farmers and businesses, in protecting and promoting biodiversity. Through digital tools and educational activities, the Landscape Laboratory aims to mobilise the population to contribute to the biodiversity database in the municipality of Guimarães and promote more sustainable agricultural and business practices.
This will also be another contribution to the fulfilment of Guimarães’ goals in the area of biodiversity, also established under the Green City Accord, which are referenced in the Guimarães Biodiversity Action Plan, the final version of which will be presented in September. It should also be noted that this is the fifth Laboratório da project to be approved for funding from the Environmental Fund, recognising the commitment and success of the organisation’s work in developing ambitious and innovative projects for nature conservation that strengthen Guimarães’ identity as a pioneering city and a benchmark in terms of sustainability.
Biodiversity is one of the pillars of Guimarães’ bid to become European Green Capital
The protection of biodiversity, the fight against climate change, the green economy, sustainable mobility, quality of life and the involvement of citizens are some of the pillars of Guimarães’ candidature for the title of European Green Capital in 2026. In this sense, Guimarães is among the three finalist cities for the title for the second year running, competing with Heilbronn (Germany) and Klagenfurt (Austria). The winner will be announced at a ceremony to be held in Valencia, European Green Capital in 2024, on a date to be decided.
