The “Birthplace of Portugal” will welcome one of Europe’s major gatherings for innovation and sustainability on June 5, 2025.
Guimarães is once again preparing to take center stage in the European sustainability landscape. On June 5, the city will host “Planetiers Day 2025”, the international event that marks the launch of “Green Week Guimarães”—an annual initiative promoted by the Municipality of Guimarães and the Laboratório da Paisagem, dedicated to sustainability and climate action.
Organized by Planetiers, Planetiers Day 2025 comes at a symbolic moment for Guimarães, recently announced as the “European Green Capital 2026″—a title awarded by the European Commission recognizing the city’s commitment to urban, environmental, and social regeneration.
With free entry and open to the entire community, the event will bring together influential voices from both the international and national arenas to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of building a fairer and more sustainable future. The program features inspiring talks, socially impactful debates, and stage activities focusing on themes such as climate innovation, environmental justice, circular economy, and inclusion.
Confirmed speakers include Satya Tripathi, former director of the United Nations Environment Office, and Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2007 as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Cultural diversity and connection with nature will also be highlighted through the participation of We’e’ena Tikuna, a Brazilian Amazon activist, and Ermi van Oers, founder of Nova Innova and creator of solutions that merge biotechnology and regenerative design.
“Part of Green Week 2025, Planetiers Day promotes practical, technological, and innovative solutions for sustainability. It’s a key moment on our path toward Guimarães European Green Capital 2026, where action meets transformation,” emphasizes Domingos Bragança, Mayor of Guimarães.
“Planetiers Day is an invitation to collective action. It’s not just about talking sustainability—it’s about creating space for true dialogue, innovative thinking, and concrete change,” says Sérgio Ribeiro, CEO of Planetiers. “Guimarães is showing that tradition and innovation can walk hand-in-hand toward building a regenerative society.”
Planetiers Day 2025 reinforces Guimarães’ role as a global reference for ecological transition and is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainability at local, national, and European levels.
