Guimarães has inaugurated Quinta da Ponte Forest Park in Briteiros, a new public nature and leisure space covering approximately six hectares, located near the Museum of Castro Culture and the Citânia de Briteiros archaeological site.
The park is part of the POCTEP GreenGap project – Renaturalisation and Rehabilitation of the Agrela Stream and Febras River – a funded initiative promoting the ecological restoration of approximately 9 km of waterways and the enhancement of green corridors throughout the municipality of Guimarães.
Designed by the Landscape Laboratory, the project aimed to preserve and enhance the existing natural heritage, promote the renaturalisation of the banks of the Febras River, restore riparian habitats and create recreational, contemplative and environmental education spaces integrated into the landscape.
The intervention prioritised the preservation of the existing tree cover, comprising more than 900 trees, the use of permeable surfaces, naturalised pathways, wildlife and plant observation areas, seating areas and facilities with a low environmental impact.
This intervention strengthens ecosystem services, particularly biodiversity conservation, ecological connectivity, riverbank stabilisation, carbon sequestration and climate change adaptation.
The new Quinta da Ponte Forest Park provides the community with a space for leisure, recreation and contact with nature, contribut
