The event brought together all the members of the European Green Capital network, including Guimarães, European Green Capital 2026.
Guimarães, European Green Capital 2026, was represented this Wednesday and Thursday at the opening ceremony of the European Green Capital 2025, in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania – the city that holds the title until the end of this year.
During the ceremony, the delegation from Guimarães, led by Adelina Pinto, councillor of Guimarães City Council, and made up of Isabel Loureiro, coordinator of the Guimarães 2030 Mission Structure, Carlos Ribeiro, executive director of the Landscape Laboratory, and Dalila Sepúlveda, director of Guimarães City Council’s Environment and Sustainability Department, had the opportunity to highlight the programme lines planned for the city as European Green Capital in 2026, as well as address the main axes of the municipality’s environmental strategy, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
Throughout the various sessions, Guimarães’ representatives were also able to share ideas and innovative sustainable solutions to promote collaboration and good practices to jointly face the challenges of the future. In this context, practical knowledge on the reorientation and reuse of existing urban infrastructures was also discussed, in line with the new European Bauhaus.
The first day of the ceremony was marked by a speech by the mayor of Vilnius, Valdas Benkuskas, who presented the city’s sustainable commitments and kicked off the celebrations. The different panels were attended by renowned political figures and environmental experts.
It should also be noted that the event brought together all the members of the European Green Capital network, including Guimarães, European Green Capital 2026, which made it possible to foster networking for the creation of partnerships and joint initiatives with an impact in the area of sustainability.
