Laboratório da Paisagem Launches Guide Dedicated to the Mammals of Guimarães

The Laboratório da Paisagem has presented its latest publication, the “Guide to the Mammals of Guimarães.” This work continues the series of local biodiversity guides initiated with the “Guide to the 100 Birds of Guimarães,” followed by the “Guide to the Pollinating Insects of Guimarães” and the “Guide to the 50 Trees of Guimarães.”

Each of these publications reflects the institution’s commitment to documenting and valuing the municipality’s natural heritage. Featuring around 50 mammal species, the new guide presents illustrations and detailed descriptions of each species, their natural habitats, and the main signs of their presence in the region. The publication also provides accessible scientific information about mammals, reinforcing the appreciation and knowledge of local biodiversity. Readers can even scan a QR code with their mobile phones to listen to the sounds of each species.

The goal is to facilitate the public’s identification of these species and raise awareness about Guimarães’ rich wildlife, fostering greater environmental consciousness within the community. This initiative reinforces the role of the Laboratório da Paisagem in promoting environmental literacy and encouraging scientific knowledge about local biodiversity. The production of this guide — like the previous editions — aligns with the institution’s mission to bring citizens closer to science and nature, providing tools to better understand and protect the species inhabiting the region.

By publishing works on Guimarães’ natural heritage, the Laboratório da Paisagem contributes to a more informed and active citizenship in environmental conservation. This new publication was funded by the European URBACT program, within the scope of the BiodiverCity project, an international initiative aimed at enhancing urban biodiversity through community-based approaches. This project allowed the Laboratório da Paisagem to create another educational resource, aligned with the municipality’s sustainability strategies.

In doing so, Guimarães reinforces its position as a leading reference in urban nature protection, taking another important step in its commitment to preserving local biodiversity.
