The application presented a strategy for controlling Fallopia japonica, considered an invasive species, which integrates research and education.
Laboratório da Paisagem was the winner of the fourth edition of the Forest is Sustainability award, in the Innovation category. The application presented a strategy for controlling Fallopia japonica, considered an invasive species, integrating an innovative approach to its control and elimination, through the use of biodegradable organic blankets and biodegradable anti-weed meshes.
The strategy also includes a strong environmental education and awareness campaign on the importance of identifying and combating invasive species, namely by involving citizens. This initiative is in line with the work that the Landscape Laboratory has been carrying out in Guimarães in the area of biodiversity and which will give rise to the new Local Action Plan for Biodiversity 2030.
The award ceremony took place last Thursday in Lisbon, where the Laboratory’s General and Innovation Coordination was represented by Francisco Carvalho, as well as Ana Pinheira, the researcher responsible for the project. The aim of the prize, worth five thousand euros, is to distinguish and reward the best forestry practices and recognise the importance of the forestry sector for Portugal.
The Floresta é Sustentabilidade award is an initiative developed by BIOND, in partnership with Correio da Manhã and Jornal de Negócios, with the support of PwC.
