“Nocturnal Moths and Fireflies” – A Night to Discover the Magic of Luminous Insects

On August 16, from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM, in the parish of S. Faustino, the Laboratório da Paisagem will host a special field training session focused on two fascinating groups of insects: nocturnal moths and fireflies.

During this night-time activity, participants will have the opportunity to better understand these two unique insect groups through a combination of scientific observation, environmental awareness, and field-based learning. Under the stars, it will be possible to observe the distinctive patterns of moths and the magical glow of fireflies, while learning about biodiversity monitoring and recording methodologies.

This session is part of the Guimarães 2025 Biodiversity Action Plan, which aims to engage citizens in monitoring and documenting local biodiversity, improving knowledge of the territory and supporting the development of conservation strategies. The plan includes five field sessions, each with both theoretical and practical components, held in different parishes of the municipality.

In April, a session on reptiles and amphibians took place in Urgezes. In June, participants observed mammals in Leitões. After this upcoming session on moths and fireflies, the final outing will be in October, in Fermentões, focusing on fungi.
