Reforestation of the Biodiversity Route gets underway with the planting of 470 trees

As part of the Biodiversity Route Reforestation pilot project, part of the European Green Gap project, planting work is underway on the Biodiversity Route in Guimarães, with the aim of promoting ecological recovery and enhancing the route.

Species were selected on the basis of soil characteristics and proximity to water lines. In drier areas, species such as pine trees (Pinus pinea), holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and cork oaks (Quercus suber) were planted. Next to the wetlands, where there are temporary water courses, species such as alder (Alnus glutinosa), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), birch (Betula celtiberica) and ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) were introduced. Trees such as oaks (Quercus robur), hazels (Corylus avellana), cherries (Prunus avium) and beeches (Fagus sylvatica) have also been chosen along the route, as well as providing shade for visitors and greater colour diversity throughout the seasons.

In all, around 470 new trees will be planted, reinforcing the commitment to biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

The Green Gap project is funded by INTERREG POCTEP – Portugal and Spain, promoting cross-border co-operation for nature conservation and adaptation to climate change.
