Vitória athletes clean up Costa/Couros stream on International Day of Action for Rivers
On the International Day of Action for Rivers, which falls on Thursday 14 March, the Landscape Laboratory and Vitória SC’s “A Victory of Causes” initiative organised a clean-up of the Costa/Couros stream, next to the Guimarães Teaching Garden.
Athletes and officials from various Conquistadores sports teams joined forces to collect rubbish and help clean up the watercourse that runs through the city of Guimarães. In just a few minutes they collected 111kg of waste.
The action was aimed at tackling the problem of the contamination of our aquatic ecosystems by plastic waste and had the technical support of the Landscape Laboratory. The citizen-science activity was supported by the European project BLUEPOINT, in which Laboratório da Paisagem is a partner, which seeks to valorise plastic materials. The aim is to promote understanding, awareness and literacy about plastic pollution, in the belief that this will empower society to find solutions and take responsibility for environmental preservation.
