Guimarães celebrates European Mobility Week 2025

For the 20th consecutive year, Guimarães is taking part in the European Mobility Week (EMW), an initiative of the European Commission that promotes more sustainable, accessible, and healthy mobility habits.

From 16 to 22 September, the municipality, in partnership with the Laboratório da Paisagem and several local entities, will promote a wide program of activities aimed at schools, citizens, and mobility operators.

The theme chosen for 2025 – “Mobility for All” – highlights the importance of building more inclusive and resilient cities, placing citizens at the center of the green transition.

Among the highlights of the program is the presentation of the book “A Journey with Gui, Where Portugal Was Born!”, a pedagogical story featuring Gui, an electric bus that invites young people to rediscover Guimarães in a fun and sustainable way. The public presentation will take place on 20 September, at Largo da Oliveira.

The program also includes various playful and educational activities and actions as part of Parking Day, with the participation of several secondary schools in the municipality.

In terms of public transport, the program features the official presentation of the new 100% electric Guimabus fleet, scheduled for 17 September at 10:00 a.m., at the Multiusos de Guimarães, as well as the promotion of the flexible public transport service Vitrusbus. On 21 and 22 September, the intermunicipal network Ave Mobilidade will provide free transport, encouraging the use of collective transport. In addition, access to the Guimarães Cable Car will be free on 21 September, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The community will also be invited to take part in different initiatives, such as experimental trips, awareness-raising actions, and cultural moments. On 21 September, Toural Square will be closed to traffic, turning the heart of the city into an open space for cultural, educational, and soft mobility activities. That same morning, the Kidical Mass initiative, promoted by Get Green and AVE – Associação Vimaranense para a Ecologia, will also take place.

By joining once again the European Mobility Week, Guimarães reinforces its commitment to climate action, reducing carbon emissions, and improving citizens’ quality of life, as it moves towards becoming the European Green Capital 2026. The program also counts on the support and participation of several partner entities, including Turipenha, Get Green, AVE, Trenmo, Vitrus, Guimabus, and Ave Mobilidade.
