The municipality renewed its role as Chair of the Green Areas and Biodiversity Working Group and was also appointed Co-Chair of the Waste Working Group.
Guimarães has renewed its position as Chair of the Eurocities Environment Forum Working Group on Green Areas and Biodiversity and was also appointed Co-Chair, alongside Oslo, of the Waste Working Group. The new mandate runs until 2027.
This appointment consolidates the municipality’s leadership in European environmental policies and its alignment with the objectives of the European Green Deal, circular economy, and urban biodiversity – an approach that contributed to Guimarães being awarded the title of European Green Capital 2026.
According to Alberto Martins, Councillor for Environment and Sustainability at the Guimarães City Council, “this appointment is a recognition of the work Guimarães has been developing in the field of environmental sustainability and European cooperation. Leading two Eurocities working groups is, above all, an opportunity to continue developing and sharing policies and practices that make cities greener, more resilient, and more sustainable.”
Through the Laboratório da Paisagem, the municipality had already been serving as Chair of the Green Areas and Biodiversity group, managing, together with Eurocities, the member cities to ensure coherent and coordinated progress.
These roles also include ensuring that activities and discussions are aligned with the forum’s objectives and themes, as well as the European Union’s priorities and targets. In addition, Guimarães provides support for public consultationsand technical reports within the network.
