New scientific publication on Nature-Based Solutions in Guimarães

Researchers from the Laboratório da Paisagem, the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, the School of Architecture – The University of Texas at Austin, and the Universidad De La Costa (Colombia) have published a new scientific article in the international journal Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment.

The study, entitled “Impact of nature-based solutions (NBS) on urban surface temperatures and land cover using remote sensing and machine learning”, analyzed Guimarães over a decade (2013–2023), with the aim of understanding the impact of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) on reducing urban surface temperatures.

Using satellite data and machine learning techniques, the research also projects land use and land surface temperature evolution up to 2028, providing practical scenarios that can support decision-makers and planners in defining climate transition policies and actions.

This study combines science, technology, and local-scale analysis to support the development of greener, more resilient, and inclusive territories, in line with Guimarães’ commitments towards carbon neutrality by 2030 and the title of European Green Capital 2026.
