Guimarães invites citizens to co-create the “Bairro C – Carbon Zero Commitment”

The Municipality of Guimarães, the Laboratório da Paisagem and RdA have taken another decisive step towards carbon neutrality by launching an interactive questionnaire on the Maptionnaire platform, placing citizens at the heart of the design of Bairro C – Carbon Zero Commitment.

This pilot project, funded by the European Union through the NetZeroCities programme, aims to transform the area defined by the Zona de Couros, Caldeiroa and Avenida Conde Margaride into a true living lab of culture, creativity, knowledge and science, integrating environmental sustainability solutions to help Guimarães reach net-zero emissions by 2030.

Rooted in a green pact with the community, Bairro C brings together universities, cultural associations, companies and residents around a shared vision: to reduce climate impact while also valuing historical heritage and the creative economy. The initiative has already been recognised by the Guimarães 2030 platform as a European example of social innovation and climate action, thanks to its integrated approach across energy, mobility, waste, land use and civic participation.

The newly launched questionnaire makes full use of Maptionnaire’s mapping features. Each participant can draw directly on the map — identifying points, routes and areas — suggesting, for instance, where to install benches, which pedestrian paths are most used, or which plots could host community gardens. These geo-referenced contributions allow municipal technicians to accurately interpret local needs and opportunities and, above all, support future urban interventions that enhance the quality of life for those who live, work or study in Bairro C.

The survey is structured around the project’s four operational pillars — Mobility, Energy, Circular Economy and Green Areas & Biodiversity — and calls on citizens to design concrete actions in emission reduction, energy efficiency, waste management and green space expansion. All responses collected until May 12 will be analysed by the project team.

By participating at app.maptionnaire.com/q/labpaisagem-bairroc, each person helps reinforce Guimarães’ commitment to the European Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, proving that energy transition and climate adaptation are only possible when collective intelligence is engaged from the very beginning.
