Students from Guimarães Discover Sustainability Best Practices in Pontevedra as Part of Eco Parlamento 2026

As part of Eco Parlamento 2026, students from seven school clusters in Guimarães took part in a study visit to Pontevedra, a Galician city internationally recognised for its sustainable mobility policies, public space regeneration and efforts to improve urban quality of life.

The initiative provided young participants with a hands-on learning experience focused on sustainable urban solutions, introducing them to international best practices in mobility, environmental protection, waste management and sustainable territorial development.

The visit was accompanied by Pontevedra’s Councillor for the Environment, Xaquín Moreda, who presented some of the main strategies implemented by the municipality to transform the city into a more sustainable, accessible and people-centred urban environment.

Throughout the visit, students had the opportunity to explore pedestrianisation initiatives and public space improvements, urban renaturalisation projects, such as the restoration of the Gafos River, as well as community composting solutions and smart waste management systems.

More than just a technical visit, this experience offered students direct contact with concrete examples of sustainable urban transformation, encouraging exchanges between young people from different school communities and reinforcing values such as active citizenship, collaboration and environmental responsibility.

Eco Parlamento continues to establish itself as a project dedicated to empowering young people to take climate action, encouraging reflection, participation and the involvement of younger generations in building more sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities, better prepared to address future environmental challenges.
